Respect and love for our land

TURNING THIS CHALLENGE INTO AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FUTURE
SUSTAINABLE VITICOLTURE FOR A LONG-TIME QUALITY

Prosecco DOC loves its land

Global viticulture has faced one challenge after another in its history, due to the appearance of diseases and pests as a result of trade with other areas that were climatically and ecologically different. Over time, thanks to scientific research, mankind has faced and overcome these challenges, ensuring continuity of wine production over the centuries.

Sustainability is the meeting point between today and tomorrow: it comes from the ability to maintain valuable productivity over the long term in which we weigh up energy, economic, social and ecological aspects.

Since every agricultural system overlaps with a natural ecosystem, a certain environmental impact is inevitable. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a specific sensitivity to understand how to intervene to reduce the impact of the agricultural system as much as possible, maintaining and preferably increasing the quality of the final product.

PROSECCO DOC SUSTAINABILIY AND INNOVATION

The Consorzio and the sustainability

The Consortium has decided to embrace this new frontier, showing a proactive attitude, to turn this challenge into an opportunity for the future.

Thanks to the support of Condifesa Treviso, the Consortium for the Protection of Prosecco DOC presents an annual Winemaker’s Handbook. This document is an excellent instrument for giving producers an overview of the most sustainable defence strategies in the vineyard.

For a long time, the Consortium has undertaken a collaboration with Equalitas, an entity that brings together many stakeholders, including Federdoc, CSQA certifications, Valoritalia and Gambero Rosso, to promote sustainable wine through a standard that can protect both the final product and the area from which the product originates.

Faced with these different challenges, the Consortium wanted to reiterate its attention to the challenge of sustainability, introducing an amendment to the production regulations that includes the prohibition of using three active ingredients: Mancozeb, Folpet and Glyphosate. This decision, widely shared by producers, has generated an unexpected consensus among professionals and others which inspires us to continue on our path towards a more sustainable Prosecco DOC.
INNOVATIONS FOR THE SUSTAINABLE VINEYARDS MANAGEMENT AND FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION CRITERIA IN THE WINE-MAKING COMPANY

Overall production of Prosecco DOC

The project intends to define and transfer innovations in sustainable agronomic management to the vineyard, including: techniques for defence, nutrition, irrigation, green and soil management. The innovations aim at proposing new models, which, thanks to a more efficient input (phytochemicals, fertilizers, hydric resources, …) use, allow a better environmental protection. The research/innovation activities will focus on two production realities, Glera and Pinot Grigio, because of the great expansion of the areas planted with these two vine varieties, which together represent more than 40% of the total amount of vineyards in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, and the consequent environmental impact on a regional level.

During the project period some pilot actions will be realized in the partner companies; these actions are finalized to test the innovative agronomic strategies on the specific environmental (soil and climate) and varietal context in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The results obtained from the current research and testing will drive to the definition of a “virtuous behaviour” protocol which will be preparatory for a future environmental certification path in the wine-making company.
The project is financed by the Autonomous Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s PSR 2014/2020 – Misura 16.1.1 – Sostegno per la costituzione e la gestione dei Gruppi Operativi del PEI in materia di produttività e sostenibilità dell’agricoltura – Regional Executive Order (Dgr) 2625/2016, Decree 5589/AGFOR of 27/10/2017 for a global amount of € 18.100,00
