Prosecco DOC and Mosaico Verde: working together for sustainability

Read time: 3 min.

In the 2017-18 wine-growing season, with resolutions no. 1202 of the Veneto Region and no. 1221 of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, the Prosecco designation adjusted its wine-growing potential from 23,250 hectares to 24,450 hectares of Glera. The increase was achieved through a call for tenders that rewarded companies with environmental certification (organic and Sqnpi) and which, during the year, had committed to creating and maintaining a hedge or copse-type tree and shrub plantation, equal to at least 5% of the allocated suitability. At the end of the work, 76 hectares of hedges/groves were created, equal to 6.3% of the increase (an area greater than expected), which contributed to increasing the biodiversity and landscape beauty of our territory.
This initiative allowed the Consortium to join the Mosaico Verde project for the enhancement of biodiversity in the Prosecco appellation.

The results:

  • Territory involved: Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions
  • Wineries involved: 1,322
  • Trees and shrubs planted: 126,544
  • Total area: 76 hectares
  • Most commonly planted species: hornbeam, field maple, black alder, English oak
