Belluno and the surrounding area

All the flavours of the mountain

Belluno, nestled in the Dolomites.

Established in the first century BC, it became the Alpine capital in 1999, rising above a spur not far from where the river Ardo meets the Piave.

The Splendid City

To the north of the city rise the Dolomites, specifically the Schiara group, while to the south the Alpine foothills divide the Venetian plain from Belluno.

The probable Celtic origins of the city's name are particularly fascinating, with "bel" meaning bright and "dunum" meaning fortified, making Belluno "the splendid city".

Attractions

The two most unmissable events in the city of Belluno are:

  • Festa della Madonna Addolorata (Festival of Our Lady of Sorrows), which takes place in spring
  • Festa di San Martino, which takes place in autumn
