A YOUNG DOC FOR A HISTORIC WINE
The Controlled Designation of Origin status, granted in 2009, refers to a set of regulations which are the basis for Prosecco DOC and which clearly lay out the characteristics of this wine.
Below are some of the key points of the regulations.
Types: Prosecco Frizzante, Spumante, Tranquillo
Appellations: Prosecco DOC is the main designation. The special mentions Treviso and Trieste may be used if the grapes are harvested and the wine produced and bottled exclusively in these two provinces.
Grape varieties: Glera is the basic variety used to produce Prosecco. The following varieties may also be used up to a maximum of 15% of the total: Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Perera, Glera lunga, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Nero, in the white winemaking process.
Production area: the provinces of Belluno, Gorizia, Padua, Pordenone, Treviso, Udine, Venice and Vicenza.
Minimum alcoholic strength: 10.5% Vol (semi-sparkling, still), 11.0% Vol (sparkling).
